Konstanty to start opener in bold Phillies gamble
Philadelphia manager Eddie Sawyer shocks with Jim Konstanty as the opener against the Yankees' Vic Raschi in the 1949 World Series. Konstanty, 33, appeared in 74 games this season and had not started a game since 1948. The move defies expectations as the Phillies seek a crucial game one victory in a best of seven.

Henrich Declares No Desire To Manage Yankees
Tommy Henrich, veteran Yankee outfielder first baseman, says he has no managerial ambitions anywhere including the Yankees or Kansas City. He cites family happiness over a possible major league or minor league post and indicates he would only accept a responsible front office role. His playing days appear near end after injury and World Series ineligibility.
