Washington reports the Army will test the Nike Zeus antimissile again next weekend over the Pacific from Point Mugu California. Officials seek about 100 million for production and about 200 million for 1963 for further development amid renewed Soviet nuclear threats and testing.
A string of fatal crashes leaves twelve dead. In Indianapolis five teens from Franklin Central High perished after a New York Central train struck their car. In Fremont Nebraska a family of seven died when their car collided with a semi trailer. Red China admits farm and factory failures amid economic strain and studies Soviet methods as it seeks to boost light industry and raw materials.
Harold B. Finger of NASA said a nuclear engine rocket could be flight tested in about five years under the RIFT program with AEC. A contractor would start development after 1962 for a 1966 67 flight test window from Cape Canaveral using a Saturn like first stage.
Memphis officials, supported by a large police presence, admitted 13 Negro children to four previously white schools. The move ends segregation in the district, occurring under federal court pressure with no reported incidents. Each school was ringed by 500 or more police, patrols with billy clubs on each block. The desegregation date had been kept secret until this morning, catching residents by surprise.
