A mystery bomb exploded in Times Square injuring seven as crowds fled. Police suspect a crank, following earlier bomb scares and a live hand grenade found in Central Park. A Waldorf alert prompted a hotel room search. no bomb found.
The Supreme Court begins a new term amid a near record docket with about 1000 appeals anticipated. Justices will hear cases from birth control laws to anti union dues grounds and challenges to Communist and Smith Act provisions.
Soviet Premier Khrushchev challenged UN Secretary General Hammarskjold to resign and warned he would not recognize UN decisions without a reform of its peace machinery. He attacked Hammarskjold in the General Assembly while Eisenhower rejected a direct meeting. Khrushchev placed his name on the speaker list as the dispute widened. President Eisenhower in a letter said no meeting would help unless the Soviet Union shows a genuine desire for reductions in tension.
ZANESVILLE observed the dedication of the Dillon Dam flood control project on Sunday. Secretary Arthur S. Flemming called the $31 million effort a symbol of American ingenuity and cooperation between government and people. The 1400 foot long, 118 foot high dam on the Licking River near Zanesville required relocating Nashport and Irville villages and a highway and a railroad. A reservoir filling target is December 1, with a permanent pool over 1325 acres and total reservoir area around 10 000 acres mostly farmland.
