Man at Athens State Hospital Ends Life After Visit

J W Manning a 41 year old patient at Athens State Hospital was found hanged in the strong room early Tuesday morning. Coroner J J Lane ruled death a suicide placing no blame on staff. Manning, from Glen Roy, had violent spells requiring confinement at night and died after his wife visited on Monday. The inquest heard eyewitness testimony from ward staff and attendants, and the body was sent to the family home for burial.

Teachers Strike Over Legal Pay in Syracuse

Columbus Ohio Oct 2 the board of education of Syracuse Meigs county reported to State School Commissioner Jones that the teachers are on strike demanding the legal salary be paid. They claim they receive only part of the monthly wages while a portion remains unpaid.

Trustees Reach Road Agreement Over Power Plant Site

Three years more, the owner would have been debarred from closing it up, whereas now he probably will force the state to condemn and pay for it. A resolution drafted by Congressman Albert Douglas as peace plenipotentiary made the university agree to build a road around the power plant for hospital use, with each institution paying half. The 30 trustees drew mileage for coming to settle a matter that might have been handled by telephone.

Athens trio makes fast Cadillac trip to Columbus

A quick trip by three prominent Athens men in a Cadillac covered the distance to Logan in one hour thirty minutes. C. E. Cameron B. L. Horn and C. H. Horn rode to visit Columbus, meeting with Journal-Gazette staff, and planned to continue to the capital city for business and sightseeing. B. L. Diphtheria Epidemic Closes Logan Schools

An outbreak of diphtheria sweeps Logan Ohio with about 45 to 50 cases. Two deaths occur in the past days. The board of health closed schools indefinitely. Ten cases are reported in one Riverdale addition building.

Trustees Meet and Fix Things in Joint Columbus Session

A joint meeting of the state hospital for the insane and Ohio University trustees in Columbus resolved a conflict over a hospital heating plant right of way. The university paid 2,600 dollars for the lot, granting the hospital the needed access without disturbing future construction. The plan calls for a 70 by 80 foot building soon to be completed, one third finished.

Baker City Oregon October 2.Business is suspended as excited men discuss the ante-mortem statement of ex Sheriff Brown badly hurt by a dynamite bomb Monday night. Brown said he was followed for three weeks and believed his would be attackers were tied to the Western Federation of Miners over his role in the Steunenberg and Adams cases. Brown died this morning.

A Queen Esther circle will be organized by the Athens society under the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the M E Church. Vienna reports Emperor Francis Joseph is seriously affected by a severe cold. Court physicians monitor his health as the sovereign rests in the Hofburg. Officials say no other royal matters are affected by the illness.
