Armed deputized forces rushed to Healdtown and Wilson as unrest threatened polling points. Deputies guarded sites while Gov. Walton faced tension over election enforcement near Ardmore Oklahoma.
Oklahoma voters cast ballots as thousands of deputized vigilantes surrounded polling places. Armed squads patrolled cities while Governor Walton’s forces faced a tense atmosphere with no shootings or arrests reported in Oklahoma City early morning.
Oklahoma citizens vote on six measures as a pivotal election. One initiative petition would allow the legislature to convene by a majority vote without the governor's consent, and its first use would be to impeach Governor Walton.
The mayor and chief of police refused election access and were enjoined by election officials. Armed deputies and vigilantes protected polls at Heald Town and Wil son as Sheriff London mobilized 300 extra deputies with thousands more volunteers. Athens Board of Education formally signs a contract with Ohio University to extend teacher training to city schools. University gains limited management while subsidizing salaries of trainee teachers, with expansion planned to add a new grade next semester at the West Side building. Construction progresses on the new high school and West Side site with brick selections, foundations poured, and roof lines rising as contracts for drainage and vaults are awarded.
