Nelsonville honors C Stanley Mechem with bypass sign unveiling
Friends and officials gathered at Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville to unveil signs naming the Nelsonville bypass after C Stanley Mechem. Mechem, a Nelsonville native and longtime state legislator, died in 1989 after serving in the Ohio Senate from 1942 to 1965 and leading the Republican majority for a decade. Former Gov. Bob Taft called him Southeast Ohio's greatest advocate in Columbus and attended the event due to the Taft-Mechem family ties.
