Chicago report shows motor vehicle fatalities fell 12 percent in October 1956 to 5450, the lowest October toll since 1949 and below October 1955. The Na tional Safety Council notes the downturn halted a 19 month rise, with 32 420 deaths in the first ten months, 5 percent above 1955.

Smith recently got 23 months and an 800 dollar fine for tending to cause delinquency of a minor.
