United States backs Asian African colonialism resolution at UN

The United States joined 96 UN members in approving a resolution to create a 17 member committee to speed end to colonialism. Britain France Spain and South Africa abstained while Portugal was listed as not participating. The General Assembly rejected a Soviet plan to designate 1962 as the year of elimination of colonialism. There were no opposing votes.
