CHICAGO November 25. The Executive Council of the Railway Employes Department AF of L asked for a five day week with no pay reduction as an unemployment relief measure. The council represents 400,000 workers in six shop unions and adopted the program. Six operating brotherhoods previously backed a six hour day with no pay cuts.
Violent night in Danville Virginia left more than a dozen houses shelled with rocks several outbuildings set ablaze and several loyal workers beaten as returning strikers at the Danville and Riverside Cotton Mills faced clashes amid a labor dispute involving about 4500 workers cut for 11 weeks.
President Hoover told reporters that the United States does not plan to enter trade conflicts with Russia or any nation. He commented on the Treasury notice barring convict-made goods under the new customs law.

U. S. Senator-elect Robert J. Bullley will assume his seat next Monday in the Senate. Roscoe McCulloch, who was defeated, resigned today and telephoned Bullley to request he take over the post. Ohio law ties Bullley to the unexpired term of Frank B. Willis, with a December 15 official start. federal law states he becomes eligible upon qualification.
Geneva November 26 The American delegation submitted an amendment to the Preparatory Disarmament Commission creating an escape clause like the London Naval Treaty safeguard. It lets any signatory notify others and the commission if national security is menaced and to increase armaments until the danger passes.
Columbus reports that the 1931 Ohio General Assembly will be led by lawyers, with 46 attorneys among 160 members. The House includes 35 lawyers and 11 in the Senate, agriculture figures total 29 legislators, and many representatives come from diverse professions including bankers, publishers, teachers, real estate dealers, and merchants.
