Homicides of transgender women rise in US across year
The year has seen 22 killings of transgender or gender nonconforming people in the United States, with 19 black or Latina victims, amid violence and discrimination. Victims include Kiesha Jenkins in Philadelphia, Tamara Dominguez in Kansas City, and Zella Ziona in Gaithersburg. Activists cite poverty, survival sex work, homelessness, and intimate-partner violence as factors. Community leaders say improved police relations and national attention are both steps forward and reminders of ongoing danger.
