In MUNSAN Korea an AP report says a buffer zone plan aimed at a Christmas truce appeared close as the United Nations command might accept a new communist counter proposal if Moscow clarified in writing when fighting would stop. The Red offer from a two hour subcommittee session mirrored the Allied Christmas truce formula first floated last Saturday.
The body of 44 year old Anne Ethel Stires of Glouster Route 1 was found Wednesday afternoon in a parked 1940 coupe on a country lane four miles north of Glouster. Autopsy at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus, by Dr. Horace Davidson, will determine cause of death. Sheriff Bateman and Coroner Elias led investigations with involvement from Prosecuting Attorney Shumaker. Stires, mother of nine, had been seen in Glouster taverns Tuesday night with husband Lennie. Davis owned the car and left the scene at dawn. Three youths later reported finding the body. The case remains under inquiry as autopsy results await.
London reports say Prime Minister Churchill plans to ask President Truman for assurances that U S bombers will not launch atomic attacks from British bases without prior consultation. He would also seek a full exchange of atomic secrets, while defending continued U S use of bases in Britain for world peace and security. The U S Air Force counts 20,000 personnel and 13 bases in Britain, including bomber facilities and plans near East Anglia and Oxford.
In Bremerhaven Germany General Eisenhower greeted the Pennsylvania 28th Infantry Division and Canada's 27th Brigade as reinforcements for his European command. More troops are arriving over six weeks to reach about 14 divisions and over 400000 men, surpassing Soviet forces in East Germany. The supreme allied commander then watched Canada’s First Infantry Battalion land at Rotterdam before visiting Bremerhaven where 2200 soldiers from the 28th division marched ashore.
Fire early Wednesday burned two children to death and destroyed the home of Mr and Mrs Alden Winters at Leatherwood. Three other family members were injured. Dead are Judy Winters 4 and Frank Winters 11.
Ohio's Supreme Court rejected a challenge by taxpayer Jack B. Dworken to a loyalty oath requirement for Cleveland teachers and the school system. President Truman returned to Florida with Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson aboard The Independence for a Thanksgiving dinner at the Little White House cottage. Mrs. Truman accompanied them as plans for a cozy holiday gathering were announced.
Atlantic City report says National Grange officials declined to act on a protest over Ohio Grange Master Byron Frederick of Columbus. The protest, submitted by Ralph O Brown as chair of the so called Ohio Grange Fraternity Committee, was deemed to have no legal status under Grange procedure. Brown alleged campaign funds and actions violated Grange rules and cited a professional publicity outfit backing Frederick. Brown described aggressive campaigning as improper for a Grange meeting.
Rep. John M. Vorys of Ohio said Italy’s UN entry is not for horse trading with the Soviet bloc. He stated the U S has not considered admitting Italy with a Russian satellite and voiced hope Russia would not veto Italy’s admission again in the Security Council. France, joined by the United States and Britain, was said to back a new resolution to secure Italy’s entry.
The Internal Revenue Bureau said Wednesday that J. Frank Wilcox, chief of audits in the Oklahoma City collector's office, is under a special investigation. Wilcox and the Oklahoma City office become the latest link in a growing chain of probes into the agency. To date, more than 30 employees including six regional office collectors have been fired, suspended or resigned following inquiries by the bureau and a House Ways and Means Subcommittee led by Rep. King.
