Early Boden Home in New Marshfield Area

This old frame house near the New Marshfield Albany road is the early home of Hugh Boden a Waterloo Township pio neer and first Boden family member to settle in Athens County. Now owned by Mr and Mrs Jake Katzenbach the property sits a mile south of the New Marshfield school at a road bend. Hugh Boden arrived about 110 years ago and built the home on land later occupied by the Swaim family and others. The Bodens and Mayhughs traced roots to Morgan County and both the McCoys and Allisons joined the area. The Boden family moved to New Marshfield in 1856 and John Boden became the first Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad agent in Athens County and served as sheriff. John later moved to a mill town, served on the Athens County Children’s Home board in 1881, and his father held county and township posts. John married Malvina Gabriel daughter of early Waterloo settler Elias Gabriel who participated in the township’s first election in 1826. The Bodens once owned extensive forest lands around New Marshfield, cleared by Hugh Boden. The Katzenbachs have owned the home for 25 years. Jacob Katzenbach descended from Jacob Katzenbach who came from York Township to Philadelphia and later served as a Civil War blacksmith. The Hugh Boden home has been modernized but retains age shown by its architecture and remnant features on a once 320 acre farm.
