ED CREAGH reports top Eisenhower administration officials believe a major war is unlikely despite unrest from Hungary to the Middle East. They see Soviet confidence shaken but not ready for war, while internal U.S. political debate and regional revolts test the Reds without triggering a direct clash.
62 Hungarian refugees land at McGuire Air Force Base aboard a Flying Tiger DC4 charter as the first group under Eisenhower orders to settle up to 5000 here. Four more planeloads expected for Thanksgiving and Friday. White House reports more than five million dollars in relief supplies to aid Hungary via the Red Cross. The group includes 40 men, 22 women, 28 families, with 16 under 12 and four over 60, and no unaccompanied children.
