Storm Takes Toll on Ohio Turkeys and Prices

A severe late blizzard in Ohio killed an estimated 250000 western turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Timely stockpiling by processors aims to limit consumer impact.

Captain Alan Cameron Leads Navy Football in 1942

Captain Alan R. Cameron, athletic director at the U S Naval Academy, captained the 1942 Navy football team as industry analysts warn about storm-related losses. A farmer reported 10 000 birds killed at about five dollars per head, another lost 5 000 turkeys at over six dollars each, and a processor faced 90 000 birds lost from various farms. Davisson noted Ohio's area hit supplied about 75 percent of the state’s four million turkeys. Turkeys left outside piled up three to four feet deep, though breeder birds remained largely unfazed.
