Governor-elect Donahey pledges to cut direct taxes abolish non essential offices and cut highway costs. He calls for roads at 4000 to 5000 dollars per mile to lift taxpayers from mud while criticizing the highway department. A large crowd welcomed his return to office.
London 16. Satisfactory progress reported in arranging preliminaries for the Near East peace conference at Lausanne. The British cabinet met at noon to consider a communication from France on Near East peace matters.
Police discovered a body in a field near Toledo with a crushed head. The victim, a white male, wore new expensive clothing and investigators believe the death was a homicide.
In Los Angeles on November 16 1922 Clara Phillips was found guilty of second degree murder in the Alberta Meadows hammer murder. The verdict carries a sentence of ten years to life and defense counsel Burt Harrington announced an appeal to higher courts.
Senator Weller of Maryland warned that the reopening of the wet and dry fight in the new Congress is inevitable. He said wet gains in the House and Senate would combine to create a new situation affecting Congress and the Volstead law.
Martin Riker aged 38 a roundhouse foreman was crushed and probably fatally injured when run down by an engine in the Toledo roundhouse today.
J Ogden Armour, a millionaire packer, met with President Harding in Washington to discuss the proposed fifty hundred million dollar merger of the Armour and Morris packing concerns. Neither man disclosed details of the visit or the terms of the combination.

Seward Button, chief inspector, reports the No 1 mine blast at Reilly Colliery caused by a miner's dynamite shot or a miner entering a gas pocket with an open lamp. He announced the findings today after leading the inquiry.
A Tacoma, Washington soldier James K. Hall, 22, drowned after leaping into the Ohio River to join a Pittsburgh girl known as Peggy. A prayer book and a note found on the river bank quoted the Grim Reaper and Babylon, adding a mysterious farewell.
Madison, Nov. 16. United States District Attorney W H Daugherty said dismissal of the federal indictment against Victor L Berger Milwaukee Socialist will be moved. The indictment in the western district mirrors Berger’s eastern district appeal as the other indictment has been dismissed.

Washington dispatch reports the agrarian bloc and progressives vow to fight a proposed merger among the big five meat packers. Senator Norris and Senator La Follette indicate opposition and possible probes if the plan advances.
Detroit, Mich. speeders convicted by Judge Charles L. Bartlett will confront even harsher consequences next Wednesday. He cites ten grievously injured child victims at the hospital and warns that the next offenders will gaze at death in the county morgue as the time for mercy has passed.

A large wooden bridge on the Cherry Hill railroad line near Quantico Virginia caught fire this morning. Firefighters fought the blaze but the span burned fiercely cutting all north and southbound traffic on the Richmond Fredericksburg and Memphis railroad. Trains were queued for nearly a mile on both ends while investigators seek the fire’s origin.

Joseph Britenstein once chief assistant to the United States District Attorney Ed Swartz since 1919. He has handled many hotly contested federal cases in Cleveland. Britenstein resigned yesterday to enter private law practice.
