Five Variances OK'd By Board
The Athens Zoning Board of Appeals granted temporary variances until June 30 to five Ohio University approved landlords. The owners include Elsworth Holden at 142 E State St and Josephine Mills at 271 E State St among others. Attorneys cited prior occupancy, neighbor support, and the need to protect property values while the fire damaged Holden remains.

Four Break-Ins End In One Burglary
Athens police investigated four break ins with one resulting burglary at the Quad Shop University Terrace where clothes valued between 900 and 2000 dollars were stolen. Thieves entered by a removed wire screen. Other break ins on E State Street Tastee Freeze and a trailer at Chet's Sunoco yielded nothing. An attempted break in at 143 Franklin Street was foiled when a resident intervened. Judy Loughrey lives there.

Narcotics Hearing Postponed for 19-Year-Old in Maumee

Athens Mayor Raymond Shepard and School Superintendent Samuel Henderson endorsed a Jaycee sponsored Detect Amblyopia clinic set for Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Morrison Elementary on Richland Ave. The free event targets children ages 3 to 6 with trained Jaycees and local optometrists guiding screening and provide babysitting and parking. Temperatures rose in Athens with 54 at 8:45 a.m. following 49 high Thursday.

Pressmen Now Only Union Without McBee Agreement
Athens machinists vote 143 to accept a tentative offer, leaving the Pressmen and Assistants Union Local 269 as the remaining union in a strike at the Athens plant. Five McBee unions had stayed at work after contracts expired November 1. Negotiations paused after talks broke off Tuesday over wages.
