White Settlers Brace for Britons’ Sanctions in Rhodesia

Salisbury and surrounding townships remained calm as Rhodesia's white government under Ian Smith entered its second day of independence. Commerce Minister George Rudland warned rationing could follow if Britain enforces sanctions, while Wrathall outlined aims to secure the balance of payments and tackle internal problems to sustain demand and address urgent budgetary matters. Priority for imports would go to essential footstuffs and supplies including wheat medical and veterinary items fuel and education needs.

Britain vows treason charge over Rhodesia breakaway

In Commons, Atty. Gen. Elwyn Jones warned Ian Smith that Rhodesia defiance is treason with death as penalties. The Wilson government pushed emergency powers to curb the breakaway, including orders invalidating Rhodesian laws and granting UK authority to legislate there.

Passenger jet crash at Salt Lake City kills many

Soviet Venus 2 space probe launched toward planet

Moscow reports the uncrewed Venus 2 probe launched to reach Venus around late February. It is 50 percent heavier than Venus 1, which missed the planet by over 100000 miles in 1961. Tass says Venus 2 follows the prescribed course.

Johnson orders more troops for Viet Nam and Rhodesia policy stance

Ground Forces Engage in Heavy Fighting North of Saigon

Heavy fighting raged northern Saigon as about 500 Viet Cong attacked 700 U S 1st Infantry Division troops. American officials said 100 Communists were killed with expected higher tolls. U S Civilian Worker Slain In Ve Ambush

In the Mekong delta south of Saigon two Vietnamese collaborators lured Peter Hunting a 24 year old International Voluntary Service supervisor from Vinh Long to a Viet Cong ambush. He was shot five times in the head and ten more bullets were fired into his body. The two Vietnamese unharmed accomplices reportedly joined the Viet Cong and had traveled with Hunting toward Can Tho.
