In Valparaiso Indiana James Hetzel woke his family when his parrot Polly screeched during a fire that destroyed their home. Polly was singed but the family escaped unharmed. Firefighters battled the flames and secured the scene.
Dr Joseph B De Lee marked his 67th birthday by urging that most births occur at home. He cited Chicago Lying-In Hospital’s low mortality and argued midwives can manage normal births without hospital exposure to fevers. He warned only experienced obstetricians should handle complex cases.

The D. L. Auld Co plant, closed since Oct. 19, reopened as 75 workers broke a 250-person picket line. A 150-strong police squad aided, clubs used to disperse. A striker threw a wooden sign at a car. Lawrence Lewis was arrested for investigation, and three others were detained.
In Philadelphia Sergeant Frank Koenig, a World War II veteran, died by suicide after 18 years of war injuries and gas poisoning. He was moved by seeing comrades march in an Armistice Day parade and ended his life in a cellar.

Four Civilian Conservation Corps veterans died when their camp truck struck a bridge abutment after an Armistice Day celebration in McDonald Pennsylvania. Fourteen others were injured, including Joseph Burkett and Anthony Kleas in critical condition. The dead were Thomas Tully John Dalton Thomas Robertson and Joseph Burtoft. many victims were thrown into a creek below the bridge.
Police and railroad officials ruled Fred Gaugh a 49 year old Big Four dispatcher died by suicide not linked to a wreck. He helped rescue victims after a Chicago Cincinnati express crash ten miles south of Indianapolis killed two trainmen and injured 23. Gaugh was later found dead at home from a self inflicted gunshot.
Detroit IUP reports 18 year old Frederick Mangas Jr, a star player, drank a pint of whiskey in ten minutes after boasting he could. He was pronounced dead by a physician early today.
