Joseph Gurney Cannon known as Uncle Joe and a long time statesman died at Danville Illinois shortly after noon. Myocarditis was given as the immediate cause of death. The report notes his dynamic life contrasted with a quiet death.
Denville mourns as ex speaker Joseph Cannon dies at 91 after a life spent in law and politics. Born 1836 in Guilford Courthouse North Carolina, he moved to Indiana, built a legal career, and rose to Speaker of the House from 1903 to 1912. Neighbors recall his tariff fights and long service.
