Washington reports the armistice between Germany and the Allied powers was signed at 5 am with hostilities to cease at 11 am French time. The State Department said terms would not be released immediately and Secretary Tumulty informed President Wilson at 5 am.
President Wilson disclosed to Congress and the nation the terms Germany agreed to in the armistice surrender. The release lists evacuation of Alsace Lorraine and Luxemburg, disarmament, evacuation of the left bank of the Rhine, and unconditional surrender of German forces in East Africa among other conditions. The estimate of total war casualties is 26 million.
The former kaiser Wilhelm and his armed entourage arrived at Eysden Station with ten cars. Dutch officials consider internment but have not spoken on the matter. Wilhelm walked the platform smoking a cigarette while Crown Prince and a man believed to be Field Marshal von Hindenburg stood nearby.
The Berlinger Tageblatt reports Emperor Karl and Empress Zita have escaped to the Sree Castle in Switzerland amid the still unsettled Vienna situation. The King of Württemberg fled Stuttgart fearing violence. his destination remains unknown.
American forces under General Pershing mounted a major push on the western front as fighting ceased in the morning. The first and second armies advanced along a seventy one mile stretch from Sedan to the Moselle with German resistance breaking and key strongholds falling. Gouraud's army swung across the Meuse from Mezieres toward Sedan driving the retreating enemy.
French troops continue to rout enemy lines along the Bel gian front with Petain’s forces advancing. British patrols cross into France and near Mons, as Haig reports, while vast German stores and trains are left behind in retreat. Allies extend ten miles, capturing Renaix Leuze and approaching Ath near the Dendre river.
In Amsterdam on November 11 the declaration of a republic in Schleswig-Holstein proclaims soldiers and workers control. A provisional government is being formed and aims for a free socialist republic to secure lasting peace.
Secretary of the Navy Daniels stated today that the American navy will be extended despite the armistice. He said the United States fleet will bear a heavy share in policing the world in the future and must be expanded accordingly.
Ping Board takes control of all ships from Mail Steamship and United Fruit Steamship Companies. The vessels now in trans Atlantic and South American service will be redirected to trans Atlantic service immediately. On November 11 at 2 P M American troops in France heard the armistice news. Motorcycle couriers shouted its end while columns cheered and sang. Gunners fired the final shells and soldiers tucked away shell casings as souvenirs. Some units learned of victory only after citations of towns and woods had been taken.
Ohio saloons will close at noon today if local boards follow a state liquor license commissioner's recommendation sent by wire this morning. The message urged immediate action as a conditions warrant.
