U S air power pounded Chinese forces withdrawing into North Korea's wooded mountains and disrupted supply lines across the Yalu. The Ninth Army reported Chinese defense lines forming in the mountains while losses were inflicted by air and artillery.
Coast to coast strike by 17,000 CWA members disrupts service in parts of New York Ohio Michigan and elsewhere. Call for jam attempts and spot picketing surface as mediators seek a settlement while WE workers stay out.
Jewels valued between 80000 and 100000 disappeared yesterday from a downtown hotel safe in Dayton. The gems were in a case inside a strong box in the Biltmore Hotel office vault at 530 p.m. Wednesday. They belonged to Arthur S. Feiss, a 61 year old St. Louis salesman with the Wholesale Jewelry Firm of M. Gevertz New York. Feiss estimated the value at wholesale prices. A private detective agency head said the strong box remained locked when Feiss called at 930 a.m. yesterday. the case and contents were missing.
The 24 year old Norwegian widow testified about an affair with Max Amerman 27, while noting Gerald Killinger 17 served as lookout in the plot to murder her husband Harold Mast. She said Killinger urged her to leave her husband and that Amerman was a “swell guy” despite the danger.
A woman’s body pulled from the Ohio River is possibly 18 year old Norma Jean Isaacs. Hamilton County coroner has not confirmed identity despite three murder warrants naming William Trew. Covington sister Velma Borchers identified a birthmark, while pathologist says no birthmark exists. Authorities seek Trew in connection with Isaacs’s disappearance.
Ohio tax commissioner imposed 90 cents per gallon tax on Georgia made wine sold in Ohio effective Nov. 13 in retaliation for a Georgia tax on Ohio wine sold in Georgia. Commissioner C Emory Glander announced the action as a reciprocal tax measure.
Mrs Emma Marback aged 60 was wounded in the head and remains in critical condition at Municipal Hospital. Police say a railroad engineer went berserk, held the landlady and Mrs Marback for hours with a .22 pistol before shooting himself. J D Bradish ruled the death a suicide.
Encouraged by election results, some Republicans may create a permanent Senate committee on un American activities in January. The plan would mimic the House committee in scope and duties, forming an ongoing inquiry unit.
A federal grand jury indicted Oscar Collazo, 37, for murder in the November 1 attack on President Truman at Blair House. Griselio Torresola was killed, guard Leslie Coffelt died, and Collinsco faces potential death sentence in DC. Under DC law, all involved in a felony that results in death share murder liability.
Columbus reports Albert A. Waldman state industrial relations director issued an order raising the minimum wages for more than 115000 women and minors in Ohio hotels and restaurants. Service workers receive 40 cents per hour and non service workers 55 cents per hour, replacing 13 to 21 cent baselines set in 1936.

New Delhi reports Tibet appealed directly to the United Nations for aid and intervention against the Chinese Communists on November 8. Sources in India refused to be identified and UN headquarters in Lake Success had no word on the appeal. The channel of the appeal from the Himalayan region was not disclosed.
In Columbus yesterday candidates offered differing views on Ohio's new office type ballot. In Cleveland, George H. Bender credited Taft's Senate victory to the ballot, while Don H. Ebright claimed he would have won the governorship with the old party column. Lausche’s win was linked to the new ballot and his non endorsement of U S Senate candidates.
The Defense Department identified only two Korean War casualties in list No. 147 made public today. Both were killed in action.
The United States with Britain and France urges the UN Security Council to discuss Korea without waiting for Chinese representatives. Russia vows to block until China is allowed to respond. The resolution asks for withdrawal of Chinese forces, all nations to avoid aiding North Korea, and urgent review by the UN Korean Committee.
Republicans gained a 52.3 percent share of a total off year vote count exceeding 40.7 million with state totals showing governor or senator tallies. Democrats trailed with about 46.3 percent as of AP figures.
