Governor Lausche to meet with Ohio Consolidated Telephone Co. and CWA leaders at the executive mansion to discuss the southern Ohio telephone strike. He will delay a special legislative session planned for today and pursue arbitration talks first. Portsmouth civic group backs waiting on the talks before any session.
Cleveland Mayor Anthony J. Celebrezze urged negotiators from the press and the Cleveland Newspaper Guild to return to his offices in Cleveland for night sessions if needed after a nine day shutdown of the Cleveland Press News and Plain Dealer. He reported definite progress after three hours of talks Thursday. In Oxford England the Communist Club voted unanimously to dissolve, stating that the party should resume life without its leadership.
The Ohio Valley Improvement Association urged completing Ohio River navigation modernization by 1970, not 20 to 25 years. The group opposed tolls on waterways and re elected OVIA officers Harry M. Mack, Hudson Biery, and Kenneth Lloyd. Lloyd reported 800 municipalities in the eight-state Ohio Valley have sewage treatment plants, stressing ongoing industrial waste control requires sustained effort.
President Eisenhower announced up to 5000 Hungarian refugees would be admitted under the Refugee Relief Act. The move aligns the United States with European nations in offering haven to those who fled Russian dominated rule, establishing special quotas and procedures for victims of Communist aggression.
Secretary Ted W. Brown won the executive state office with 1,985,712 votes, while Hubert Lynch had 1,337,447. Atty. Gen. C. Will Neill led the ticket for governor with 1,980,780, defeating Michael V. A blaze gutted two adjoining Montgomery Ward buildings and their warehouse in Bowling Green Ohio. Fire Chief Maurice Einstone estimated damage at 300000 dollars or more. The fire began in the business district and burned for hours as crews from Bowling Green Weston and North Baltimore fought it. A wall collapsed into the street but no injuries were reported among spectators or firefighters. Two pumpers stayed on to prevent flare ups in basements.
Benny Bowen 21 walks into Pasadena municipal court with a 40 pound sack of pennies to settle a $58 speeding and drag racing fine. Judge Donald R. Wright finds him guilty, and Bowen pays the amount hours later with pennies counted in envelopes.
In Carthage Missouri Neus Dunn twelve-year-old Boy Scout swimmer drowned at the YMCA pool after his foot became wedged between a filter pipe and the pool wall. He was among seventeen scouts in the group when the incident occurred as others struggled to free him.
Logan Mayor Francis Myers announced the resignation of Service Director Russell Poling effective November 15 due to ill health. Poling, appointed last January, will leave the post without an immediate replacement. the position pays $200 per year. In Korea, authorities accused President Syngman Rhee of planning an invasion northward, calling a session of the Korean Armistice Commission and expected to charge territorial violation.
JOE, a renegade 1800 pound buffalo, has survived his fifth automobile collision in five years near Big Delta Alaska. He caused 300 in damage to a territorial police patrol car as another vehicle struck him. Old Joe had been ailing, and roams near a buffalo herd in the Big Delta country.
Cincinnati. William Worthington Pugh testified he was questioned at length by police regarding the fatal stabbing of his wife Audrey Evers Pugh on April 11. Pugh served as a state witness in the trial of Robert V. Lyons, a 43 year old meter reader charged with first degree murder in the slaying at her home after she reprimanded him for wrong door entry.
Washington notes that nine among 96 senators will join in January, lifting the age mix. Frank Church at 22 becomes the youngest, replacing Len Russell Long who is 38, as Theodore Green remains the oldest at 98. Lausche and Revercomb at 61 are the senior newcomers.
FRANKFORT Kentucky Gov A B Chandler said he will seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960 if party support is found. The political coalition of the Clements Wetherby group collapsed, keeping Chandler in a tight Senate race with Sen C E Clements while former Gov Lawrence Wetherby lost to John Sherman Cooper for the remaining term of the late Alben W Barkley.
NORTH BERGEN N J An early morning Beechcraft crash that clipped a 810 foot television tower and smashed into a crowded apartment house killed four people including two plane crew members and two residents. About 3000 residents were evacuated as firemen fought flames and a damaged gas line. 15 others, including 12 firefighters, were injured. The WOR tower owned structure stands unused since 1953 and will have its top removed as a precaution.
