Democrats sweep Athens County races in tight election
In Athens County, Democrats won seven of eight county offices and gained a 78 vote edge in another contest. Prosectorial candidate Michael Nolan and Sheriff hopeful Paul Brown led tight results as Ohio University student votes boosted Democratic totals, with recounts considered in close races.

Mrs. Allen, a Democrat and deputy recorder, beat Republican Thomas L. Ruth 11 964 to 6 417 to win the recorder post. Democrat Richard L. Coe, a Litton Industries printer, defeated Ira Burnfield 10 521 to 7 462 to become county treasurer. High turnout and rain slowed counts. punch card and computer counting sped results overall.
