A surprise fire drill at the Athens County Children's Home disrupted dorms Thursday night. Children were awakened and guided to safety by house parents and older youths. Girls exited in 41 seconds, boys in 68, and the main building cleared in 21 seconds as photographers recorded reactions.
The Senate voted to bar aid to Yugoslavia and the United Arab Republic and to restrict Indonesia assistance in the foreign aid authorization bill. Proxmire and Lausche filed amendments to curb or remove aid to Communist states. The Priest Gruening provision banning aid to threatening nations was approved 65 to 15.
British Prime Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home won the Kinross and West Perthshire seat by a 9328 vote margin, providing a political boost after Conservative losses. He left the Lords to become PM and prepared to face Labour in the new parliamentary session.
United States and Soviet Union agreed on principles to govern space exploration. The declaration and resolution, to be submitted to the UN General Assembly special political committee, cover rescue of astronauts and space vehicles that land on foreign soil and liability for space vehicle accidents.
Washington and Moscow report progress on a stalled 250 million dollar wheat sale to the Soviet bloc. Khrushchev noted American grain dealers made a reasonable approach and a possible agreement may follow. Negotiations center on shipping rates and American owned ships.
Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman, during a Columbus visit, said farm income has risen about 300 per year since 1960 and that rural programs are gaining backing among farmers. He spoke at Ohio State University and cited Grass roots meetings in Putnam County as evidence. He praised Food for Peace and floated a products for peace idea using idle factory output.
Columbus police say a three man robbery and shooting spree is under control after two suspects Lloyd Powell 20 and Earl Douglas Pope 18 admitted taking part in the Clintonville bank holdup and a west side carryout robbery. A third suspect Warren Sylvester Flannigan 23 was wounded and treated in Springfield.
Washington reported the United States recognized South Vietnam’s new provisional government led by coup leaders. Officials, citing increased Communist operations, began considering restoring aid as Australia Japan Thailand and Malaysia followed with recognition.
Senator Themis Dodd apologized for harsh remarks that heated the Senate decorum. Dirksen and Mansfield did not attend when the outburst occurred, then Dirksen arrived angry and challenged the session while Mansfield tried to calm rivals. The exchange left leaders frustrated as lawmakers waited out the dust-up.
Sen Norris Cotton of New Hampshire predicts Barry Goldwater will win the state's first in the nation presidential primary despite Gov Nelson Rockefeller's early campaign. Cotton says Goldwater remains the strongest GOP candidate with a campaign that intensifies toward the end. He notes Rockefeller announced his bid in Albany and that Dewey backs Rockefeller as the best GOP nominee.
Veteran Ohio Senate majority leader C Stan Mechem spoke at a luncheon in Columbus hosted by the Ohio State Council of Retail Merchants. He said he will undoubtedly run for reelection next year and noted his shoe stores in Nelsonville and Athens.
The United States has invested 277.4 million in arms stocks in Western Europe for Army divisions shifted from the U.S. The 2nd Armored Division moved to West Germany for exercises near the Torn Curtain using about 155 million in war games. After maneuvers, about 4000 vehicles will be returned to depots west of the Rhine and the unit will fly back to Ft. Hood Texas.
The president of the Cleveland Mental Health Association appealed to James A Rhodes and Ohio Senate Majority Leader Stanley Mechem to improve the state's mental health program before the legislature's regular session. Letters were sent to Rhodes and Mechem on Thursday.
Ohio’s Pardons and Parole Commission will review the parole it granted to 29 year old Roy Schinagle, convicted in the Red Suppers murder case. The review follows concerns about prior approvals and release conditions amid ongoing questions at the state level.
Columbus reports the Ohio Department of Development issued a batch of firsts under its new advertising program. The Se cond Corp represents the first firm to locate in Ohio as a direct test of the program. Atéoa, a chemical shires maker, is the first newly formed company to apply for funds from the Ohio Development Finance Commission and the first small firm seeking state aid. The department says the real estate deal involved a 10,000 square foot plant formerly owned by Air Reduction Co.
Washington -iW- Logan Broadcasting Co filed with the Federal Communications Commission to operate a new FM station on 105.5 megacycles in Logan Ohio.
