A federal appeals court rejected a delay plea and told 30 Mississippi school districts to prepare for desegregation by December 31. Judge Griffin B. Bell urged immediate action, saying districts must start now.
President Nixon and key advisers spend a Florida weekend at a bayside home mixing relaxation with high level talks on Vietnam and arms control with the Soviets. Attending are Attorney General Mitchell and Kissinger with Rogers and Defense Secretary Laird arriving later.
About 100 Viet Cong guerrillas attacked two Saigon fringe outposts at midnight aiming to destroy them but did not breach the city. One policeman died, seven wounded. three guerrillas were found dead nearby. Similar clashes near Saigon left two Americans dead and six wounded. In another strike, 150 North Vietnamese troops attacked a militia post 30 miles northwest of Saigon, with 84 enemy dead.
Senate leaders Mike Mansfield and Hugh Scott unveil a resolution backing Nixon’s bid to end the Vietnam War while urging a mutually observed cease-fire. The measure, drafted to gain broad support, follows a House approval backing negotiations for a just peace.
In South Africa 62 miners were feared dead after an underground blast at the Buffelfontein gold mine. A General Mining and Finance Corp spokesman said rescue teams pulled 29 injured workers from the shaft area seven thousand seven hundred feet below the surface and that the blast occurred in a shaft being sunk off another shaft not in regular production.
Robert Hartnell of Ohio Inns Inc. told the Legislative Public Inspection Committee that state lodge conventions occur mainly in the off season from November to February. He said the public has priority June to October and that families make up 96 percent of on season business while transient eaters at lodge restaurants concern complainants. Limited rooms fill months in advance.
An unidentified body and an empty lifeboat labeled Keo were found Thursday night about 40 miles southeast of the Keo disaster area where the 629-foot Liberian tanker broke apart in a storm. The body was recovered by the USS Fox during an extensive search of ocean off Nantucket.
Columbus Ohio workers walked off the job despite a mayoral warning of dismissal. Mayor M E Sensenbrenner said any man who walks off the job is through as Local 1632 of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees defied union leadership and voted to strike during contract talks.
The Apollo 12 team begins a noon EST countdown, 167 hours to liftoff on Saturn V next Friday at 11 22 am. The 98 hour countdown includes four holds totaling over 69 hours to rest and address issues. Astronauts Charles Conrad Jr Richard F Gordon Jr and Alan L Bean rehearse commands in ship and lunar lander simulators and study lunar topography.
The Senate passed a bill to protect consumers from arbitrary and erroneous credit reports. Senator William Proxmire hailed it as a major consumer victory as it would give individuals a federally guaranteed right to correct false information in their files. The measure moves to the House for consideration, with final action not expected until next year.
Government officials say they will not issue a permit for a large antiwar march on November 15 near the White House due to a substantial likelihood of violence. Deputy Attorney General Kleindienst defends the collective executive decision amid claims of government inaction.
