No tidings of the Illinois.
A Port Washington letter dated Vet. 25 describes the Toledo wreck on Lake Huron. All aboard perished except two deck hands and one steerage passenger. Three ladies and two gentlemen were in the cabin. steerage included a man wife two children and two others. Many bodies likely unaccounted as wreckage lined the shore for miles and the sea still roars making search difficult.
Advices from Ragged Island report a hurricane on September 9 that unroofed many houses damaged others and destroyed a large quantity of salt. Salt boats were wrecked and all vessels on the island were detained.
