The French presidential contest is effectively decided with Charles de Gaulle conceding willingness to seek re election. Five opponents campaign hard but privately concede slim odds. Early soundings suggest De Gaulle could win up to 65 percent of the vote with a runoff possible on December 19 if no majority is reached on December 5.
In Saigon a team of U S surgeons removed a live 40 mm grenade from trail Nguyen Tran Chinh 52 who was wounded when a Viet Cong grenade lodged in his back. The operation behind a hospital used sandbag cover and a wooden case to dispose of the device.
The U S unemployment rate fell to 4.3 percent in October marking an eight year low. The Labor Department highlighted 2.8 million jobless and a record 73.2 million people employed as critics question the official measures of unemployment.

Carl B Stokes plans to meet with the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections to challenge Mayor Ralph S Locher's upcoming swearing in Stokes who lost by 2458 votes asks for a recount and cites a law he says blocks certification Monday pending outcome of the recount The move centers on the inauguration date and the legality of certification.
In Cincinnati a church vote narrowly kept Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth as pastor of Revelation Baptist Church. Opponents accused him of being dictatorial and misusing funds. supporters framed the move as political. The final tally was 284 for Shuttlesworth and 276 against.
Brussels reports Queen Elisabeth aged 89, widow of Albert and grandmother of Baudouin, suffered a major heart attack.
