Voters lined up nationwide as polls opened in a high turnout contest between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson. Officials predicted 55 to 60 million ballots, surpassing the 49,820,213 record set in the past.
Front line reports describe predawn Red attacks on the Korean Eastern and Central Fronts halted by Allied forces. On Heartbreak Ridge and Sniper Ridge, UN troops held their positions after hours of combat as North Korean and Chinese units pressed but were checked.
