A 90 pound spinning top satellite, Explorer VIII, launched from Cape Canaveral aboard a 76 foot Juno II rocket at 12 23 a m, reached an apogee of 1450 miles and perigee of 215 miles. NASA says the mission aims to map ionospheric layers for improved long range and satellite communications. The launch gives the United States a lead over the Soviet Union in ionospheric science.
