Four hundred miners went on a midnight strike in Athens county causing widespread idle days as flood waters receded. The loaders earn 59 cents per ton while clean coal fetches 2.75 dollars per ton to operators, with a November 10 payday for late October work. Credit at company stores has tightened, and farmers may benefit from idle workers husking corn as power to floods recovers. The Hocking Power Company plant remains operational despite fears, aided by a cooperative mine nearby.

Last October saw the peak with about 9 000 deaths while total cases extended into spring. health officials plan anti influenza measures and urge local reports.
