Reasons Given For Layoff of Road Workers

Athens County officials explained why 45 road workers were laid off citing reduced gasoline tax and auto tag receipts. A $10,000 Nelsonville bridge cost payment and shifting the engineer’s salary to the road fund reduced the balance to 3,348.44 for maintenance through year end. Officials said no regular work remains in 1944, and potential extra funds depend on illegal early appropriations.
