Athens County wins grant for rail trail bridge and park access

Athens County is awarded a 5 107 422 grant from the Clean Ohio Trails Fund to clear 5.3 miles of the Athens Belpre Rail Trail, replace a Skunk Run bridge, and build a new parking lot linking Frost Road to Ireland Road. Total cost 143 229 with a 35 807 local match.

Gentile and Hoagland clash in Ohio Senate race 30th district

Suspect in Ohio slayings set for 2017 trial

Shawn Grate, linked to the deaths of at least four women in Ohio, has a trial date set for November 6, 2017 in Ashland County Common Pleas Court. The final pretrial hearing is September 29. Grate is charged in two deaths found in a vacant Ashland house and is alleged to have confessed to two other killings.

Halloween Block Party in Athens Sees 100 Plus Cited or Arrested

Athens Police and Ohio University police issued numerous citations over Friday and Saturday for the Halloween block party. The combined effort resulted in about 100 plus arrests or citations, including assaults on officers and obstructive charges, with liquor control and emergency services also reporting multiple actions. The event ended around 2 45 a m on Court Street.

Athens Libraries to screen Audrie and Daisy at two branches

Athens Public Libraries host two showings of Audrie and Daisy, a documentary on sexual assault captured on camera. The Athens Library screening is 6 p.m. on Nov 3 and The Plains Library screening is 6 p.m. on Nov 15, with OHIO University Women’s Center, Survivor Advocacy Program and Sexual Assault Prevention Program staff facilitating post screening talks.
