Vatican reports Pope John XXIII better after a near fatal episode from gastric heteroplasia with hemorrhage. Doctors note grave condition despite slight improvement and continued rest at the apostolic palace under Dr Piero Mazzoni.
In Sotto Il Monte Italy three farming brothers Zaverie Alfredo and Giuseppe Roncalli aged 76 74 and 69 wait for word on Pope John XXIII illness. They remain in place at the farm ready to go to Rome if needed. Records note their nephew priest Giovanni Battista Roncalli flew to Rome with news slow to reach them. The family prays for Angelo Giuseppe Pope John XXIII while maintaining deep religious devotion. Hollywood item follows. Jerry Lewis and Patti Lewis expect their sixth child in January with a girl hoped but a blue layette planned.
Mrs. Marilyn Herron 32 and her mother-in-law Thelma Herron 55 were robbed after a card party at a lodge hall on Akron's south side. The gunman took about $6, fired at Mrs. Herron who then hurled salad bowls at him, but missed. he fled.
A bill to raise Pennsylvania sales tax from 4 to 5 percent passes the legislature and goes to Gov. Scranton for signature. The measure would take effect Saturday, making the sales tax among the highest in the nation.
Bridgwater Machine Co. workers vote 190 to 79 to accept the United Auto Workers AFL CIO as their bargaining agent. The three year contract with Bridgwater Employes Association remains in force until Feb 28 1964. UAW Local 324 officers named William Perry president George Tinkham vice president Lee McVey secretary Tom Blower treasurer. Frank Batdorff division manager says the company opposed the UAW but will continue to operate as before and aims for good labor relations.
Havana states a twin engined North American Navy plane, number 147 320, fired bursts from a thick caliber machine gun at a Soviet Cuban oil crew off Cay Frances, 220 miles east of Havana. No casualties reported. Cuba blames Pentagon CIA figures and calls for U S action to end aggression.
Britain and the Soviet Union issued a joint appeal to the warring factions in Laos calling for an immediate cease fire. The appeal targeted Premier Prince Souvanna Phouma to relay the message to opposing sides and urged full cooperation with a three nation control commission to maintain peace.
Sugar prices for industrial grades fall as American Sugar Co and National Sugar Co roll back part of their 1963 increase. Gulf firm Southdown, Inc. had already cut prices in New Orleans. Northeast wholesale price now $15.50 per 100 pounds, down 80 cents from recent highs. The year began near $10.
A roof collapse at Cais de Sodre station in Lisbon crushed 48 people and injured 36 during a holiday crowd. The disaster halted anniversary celebrations for Premier Salazar and sparked sabotage reports as police opened an investigation. Passengers exiting a train from nearby beaches were among those affected.
An 18 year old girl testified she was subjected to confinement and harsh punishments for five months by her father and aunt. She described being locked in a saddlebox for days and forced to drink pine oil solution and endure three scalding showers as penalties for poor housework. The aunt faces trial on the mistreatment charges, with the father awaiting his own trial.
Senator Frank Lausche of Ohio failed on two amendments to money bills. He lost 58 to 22 aimed at removing 310000 for planning the National Fisheries and Aquarium project from a 986 million Interior Department bill. His other proposal to cap the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency budget was rejected by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Edward T. Breathitt Jr. defeats A. B. Chandler in the Kentucky gubernatorial primary with 299,621 votes to 239,784 as precincts report, ending Chandler's bid for a third term. Breathitt, 38, Hopkinsville attorney, rises as the new party standard bearer while Chandler's long political career nears its end.
In Jackson Mississippi a kerosene bomb damaged Medgar Evers NAACP field secretary's station wagon at his home. Evers and his family were present as he spoke at an NAACP meeting. Police suspect pranksters.
Columbus reports the Ohio Senate will consider Gov James A Rhodes’s industrial development plan aimed at creating 200,000 new jobs. The measure, already approved by the House with Democratic help, would add loans and incentives to attract or expand industry in Ohio.
The Huntington metropolitan area including Ironton shows its lowest jobless rate in six years with 8000 unemployed. West Virginia Department of Employment Security official George H. Gunnoe notes the Huntington office reports the reduced figure covering Huntington Ashland Kentucky and Ironton.
Business confidence broadens beyond autos and steel with new orders at six year highs for metal cutting tools and durable goods. Production rises, spending climbs, and officials cite need for tax cuts and cost control to sustain investment and growth.
First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy organizes a birthday celebration for President Kennedy with an evening dinner cruise on the Potomac aboard the 104 foot Navy yacht Sequoia. About 25 relatives and friends will join in the serenade if weather allows.
