Unscheduled Movie Rescue Involving Bobby Breen

Hollywood reports a sudden on set rescue at Malibu Lake when eight year old Bobby Breen struck his head on the lake bottom. Basil Rathbone and director Kurt Neumann dove in and pulled him to shore. After several days at home, Breen was expected back to work.

Hatchet murder case ends in second degree verdict

Gladys MacKnight 17 and Donald Wightman 19 were found guilty of the hatchet killing of MacKnight's mother. Jurors spared them the electric chair with a verdict of second degree murder, a 30 year maximum. The trio of hours deliberation ended with emotions restrained aside from a tear.

CIO Aims to Organize All Workers in Athens County

In Nelsonville a Public Square crowd heard United Mine Workers of America leaders unveil a countywide effort to unionize every worker. Theisen of CIO urged expansion to Logan and New Lexington while stressing dealer recognition of organized auto workers to boost local patronage. Speakers highlighted organizing WPA and PWA workers and called for broader worker unity across Athens County.

Tornado Ravages Seneca County in Ohio

Parole Granted for 47 Prisoners in Ohio

The Ohio Board of Parole released 47 inmates at the state penitentiary with 182 cases heard, 113 continued, and six granted conditional releases. Among those paroled were Edward Myers of Gallia for shooting to kill with parole set on or after Oct. 10, 1937 to travel to West Virginia, and Morton Rupe of Meigs for burglary with parole on Aug. 10, 1937.

Death Echo Dean Elder Arrested in Assault Case

Thomas Edwin Elder, once dean at Mount Hermon School for Boys, jailed on assault with intent to kill after S Allen Norton, former school cashier, alleged Elder menaced him with a shotgun. Police recall the Speer murder, also a shotgun case, from three years ago.

Children Find Gun Owner Is Arrested

Steubenville Ohio police arrested 54 year old miner Mike Zelick after children found a pistol and $190 in an old barn leading to a murder charge. Zelick is accused of killing 57 year old recluse John Major who was found slain and robbed in his home last Wednesday night. The gun was identified as Zelick's.
