Beatrice Rosenbaum, 10, vanished from Youngstown and was found dead in a ravine near Salem after 9 days of captivity. Coroner ruled starvation and exposure as the cause. police pursue suspects including a delapidated Ford sighting and a Cleveland arrest.
Youngstown police say a woman may have helped kidnap 10 year old Beatrice Rosenbaum whose body was found in a wooded ravine near Salem. Two farmer boys discovered the body on a coal slag dump, as investigators pursue possible involvement by the woman.
Japanese naval squadrons in the Tsing tao and Kia-Chow regions issued orders forbidding Chinese warships to engage in belligerent acts to protect foreigners. Rear Admiral Mukaida commands the second squadron. Tokyo clings to hope of a truce between northern and southern Chinese armies as Manchuria tensions rise.
Anne Ramm, a University of Washington co ed, sparked a new style fad by rolling down silk hose to save on mending and costs. The accompanying photo shows Anne modeling the look and explaining why the trend began.
About 150 New Boston high school strikers returned to classes after seniors were told they would not graduate in June unless the walkout ended. Underclassmen said they would keep pressuring the board to rehire Principal H E Higley and to resign three board members. The mass meeting was led by D K Ross and featured T Howard Winters delivering the ultimatum from Ohio state education officials.
Xenia Ohio May 28 Rev Norman J King of Bluffton elected president of the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors orphans home by the board of trustees. King has served as pastor at Wapakoneta Presbyterian church taught at Bluffton college and high school this year and was a World War chaplain overseas now active in the American Legion.
The mayor of Greenville petitions the state utilities commission to deny the Cincinnati Northern railroad request to cut four Cincinnati to Jackson Michigan passenger trains via Greenville and remove them from service.
An air crash on Sunday near Rowland field injures three people. Emerson Carsey, 28, suffers a fractured skull and may not survive. Pilot Lieutenant L H Scott has a broken jaw and minor bruises while Bert Barnes, 21, endures multiple injuries with sixty stitches and a broken bone in the foot. The bi plane valued at 2900 with no insurance, crashed within seconds after takeoff.
In Danbury Connecticut on a camping trip 15 year olds Arthur McAuliffe was shot by a small caliber rifle. Ludington and Bishop panicked fearing hanging and buried the body in a shallow grave after dragging it from Danbury Lake. Authorities said juvenile delinquency is the only possible charge.
Columbus May 28 Meredith McDowell was found guilty of murder by the Wood county court of appeals at Bowling Green. Attorney William F. Brickman of Findlay asked the Ohio Supreme Court to review the verdict.
Vice president Dawes cast a deciding vote defeating a House adjournment resolution, halting Republican plans to adjourn the Senate and forcing a confrontation over the Boulder Dam bill. Senate leaders faced a slim majority and possible indefinite session as Johnson and Curtis clashed over dates. Dawes had long urged Senate rule changes to curb filibusters.
The New York Hoover for President committee raised 34,944 dollars from 62 individuals and spent 17,527.99 in that state up to May 1. Chairman W. H. Hill told the Senate campaign investigation committee that work was nearly complete by May 1 and that about 2000 dollars would cover May expenses.
Thomas Heller age 34 of Canton was turned over to federal authorities in Cleveland to face charges of stealing a automobile and driving it into Pennsylvania. He was arrested in Canton yesterday.
TOLEDO May 28. Several persons were killed in and near Toledo in automobile accidents during the week-end.
France dispatches a commission led by General Paul Boucareille to New York to examine American aviation achievements including commercial flight and air mail. The delegation arrives amid alarmist talk of America's aviation standing.
Athens residents and Ohio University students were treated to air plane rides by aviators at Rowland field when a Sunday night accident marked the first mishap in the area. Lt. L. H. Scott, a World War veteran with 15 years in flight, piloted the plane.
Commissioner Doran announced that all highway prohibition agents will wear distinctive caps and pie plate shields to prevent motorists from confusing them with holdup men. He says the gear will be clearly visible and hinder highwaymen impersonation, and asks Comptroller General McCarl to fund the equipment or arrange reimbursement.
Senator Curtis as Republican floor leader urged unity to defeat a Senate adjournment plan. If Curtis wins the Senate may stay in session overnight from 11 a m to 5 p m the next day. Senator Johnson plans amendments to adjourn on June 5 or June 9 to advance the Boulder Canyon Dam bill amid a filibuster led by Senator Ashurst. The House calendar is clear while Senate settles its fight.
Cleveland May 28 Col Carmi A Thompson of Cleveland announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for United States senator. He seeks the seat left vacant by the death of Senator Frank B Willis and filled by Cyrus Locher of Cleveland, a Democrat.
