Berlin reeled from a citywide rail strike with no wagons moving toward Berlin from West Germany. Western sectors rely on Allied airlift for three weeks of food as Reichsbahn plans repairs under Soviet control, raising fears of renewed street clashes and a Western police role.
The foreign aid appropriation totaling 5.617 billion is facing sharp Senate opposition despite House approval. Leading Republicans and Democrats warn of substantial cuts, though President Truman saved part of the measure from a larger reduction. The bill funds Economic Cooperation Administration aid to Greece and Turkey and relief in occupied Germany Austria and Japan.

Janet Lee Armitage seven week old Attica girl died in Children's Hospital of a collapsed lung. She had been rushed to the hospital by the State Highway Patrol when she was 13 days old. She was the daughter of Charles W. and Mrs. Armitage.

Youngstown reports a 23 year old woman says she killed her former husband Alfred de Rose 37 after he attacked her present partner at Economy Motors where he worked as a used car salesman. Tim_pano and her husband John Tim_pano 47 were held without charge. de Rose died en route to hospital from a .22 pistol shot to the back. Police note a January wife beating conviction.
Dr Fred Middleton withdrew 2000 for a vacation trip East and had the sum stolen from his home hours later along with jewelry and valuables. Burglars are suspected as the cause of the loss.
Rita Hayworth, 31, wed Aly Khan, 38, in a town hall ceremony in Vallauris officiated by mayor Paul Derigon. The pair, joining Hollywood glamour with Ismaili leadership, exchanged rings in an eight minute civil service and left amid rice and a reception at the prince’s Chateau de l Horizon.
Red forces seize control of Shanghai after three days of fighting. Nationalist garrison at Woosung fortress evacuated, bridges defended until surrender. Civilians flee as thousands become free and consulates report damage with unclear casualty toll.
Paris reports Western Powers drafted a plan to unify East and West Germany and present it to the Russians within days. Maj. Gen. Joseph C. Fegan 62 USMC ret., died in Santa Margarita Hospital Camp Pendleton after injuries from a Saturday automobile crash in Carlsbad California. He served as first commanding general of the vast camp in 1942 and earlier was an aide to President Roosevelt.
Akron report says 13 year old Robert Dove was hurrying to school and crossed an Erie Railroad track when struck by a freight train. He died at the scene, authorities said.
Viscount William Leverhulme, 61, British industrialist and head of Unilever Industries, died in a Minneapolis hospital during a global family trip. He was removed from a train suffering an internal ulcer. complications led to his death en route to England for burial.
War hero James Cooper of Norwood Ohio remains on parole after his clemency was denied by the Army. Convicted in 1945 for slaying an elderly Chinese woman as she tried to pull soldiers from a sacred water buffalo Cooper had his death sentence reduced to life then 25 years and finally 8 1/2 years before parole in April 1948.
In Chardon on Auburn Center Road a fire at the Cecil Butler farm home killed nine year old Mary Ellen Butler. The blaze destroyed the house and cause remained undetermined. Cecil Butler Ruby Butler their four other children a brother and wife two guests escaped unharmed.
Gov. Lausche refused to intervene in the planned execution of 23 year old John Ross Burson of Canton. Burson, convicted of first degree murder for killing Ellsworth Ruch Jr., arrived at Ohio Penitentiary from Stark County on November 6 1948 after the Supreme Court denied his appeal.
President Truman said the Atomic Energy Commission is not a political tool and urged it back to work. He defended Lilienthal and warned against sensationalism over uranium loss and a study fellowship for a communist. Senator Hickenlooper countered claims of mismanagement and politics in the AEC inquiry.
Construction supervisor R L Smith reports 16 laborers on the President Street project were ordered out in sympathy with Portsmouth jobs by Charles Garner of the International Brotherhood of Building and Common Laborers Union of America. The move halted work for four days though other university sites remain active.
President Truman indicated Congress may be asked to work into the Washington summer to pass much of his broad legislative program. He said he hopes a major part is enacted before Congress quits, though he noted there is no agreement on an early adjournment. Speaker Rayburn said Congress will enact a full and constructive program before adjournment.
The Messenger will not publish next Monday Memorial Day to allow employees carriers and others to observe the holiday.
BLUEFIELD W V A news reports that Southern soft coal contract negotiations paused for a week after John L Lewis and United Mine Workers withdrew from talks. Lewis set a deadline of next Thursday for Southern Coal Producers Association to prove its bargaining authority.
John Holmes aged 84 from Goshen Ohio died after falling from a fourth floor hospital window at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. Coroner Herbert P Lyle reported the nurse found an empty bed at 2 a.m. and attendants recovered his body 75 feet below on a concrete walk. Holmes had been admitted May 5 for kidney problems and showed improvement.
U S Attorney General Tom Clark said Washington will press to bring Communist Gerhart Eisler back from England. A Bow Street magistrate in London rejected the extradition request on grounds the U S failed to prove an extraditable offense. Eisler faced perjury and refusal to testify charges, plus a passport falsification conviction. Mrs Gerhart Eisler sought leave to depart Ellis Island to join her husband.
Cleveland police questioned 28 year old Arlyne Hunter after she stabbed Salvatore La Porta 28 on East 55th Street. Prosecutor Joseph Stearns said the stabbing occurred in self defense as La Porta threatened her with a shotgun and a warrant was not issued after reviewing her account.
Fifteen truck drivers walked out on Thursday and picketed the offices of the Commercial Motor Freight Co and Braddock Motor Freight Co. They demand a 15 cent hourly raise to 1.10 dollars an hour.
About 220 members of the Carpenters Union in Portsmouth received a 12 percent hourly pay boost under a wage agreement with the Southern Ohio Contractors Association. The new pay scale is $2.12 cents per hour.
Virgil Miller 19 of Dayton who escaped from Mansfield Reformatory Tuesday was captured Thursday night in a Cleveland wooded area. He is serving a term for auto theft.
