In Indianapolis Indiana on May 26 Joe Caccia from Ryn Mawr Pennsylvania and his mechanic Clarence Grove of Haverford Pennsylvania were killed when their Jones Malay special leaped the southeast wall during a practice run for Memorial Day races. The car hit a tree and burst into flames. Grove died on site and Caccia died minutes later. It was the opening accident of the 1931 racing season. Track experts blamed over driving on the turns as a factor.
