Supreme Court orders Prince Edward County schools reopen

The Supreme Court orders Prince Edward County Virginia to reopen public schools on a desegregated basis by next September. County schools were closed in 1959 to avoid admitting Negro students, a dispute longstanding since 1951 and part of the 1954 desegregation decision. Justice Black writes the main opinion with Justices Clark and Harlan concurring in part.

Vinton Man Dies In One Car Crash Near Athens

Wallace William Cline 29 of McArthur Route 1 died in a one car crash south of Athens late Saturday night. State troopers said his 1955 car left the gravel road on County Road 76 struck a fence and ditch, the right door opening as he was crushed between door and seat.

21 In Ohio Killed Over Weekend

From 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday the Associated Press counted at least 13 highway fatalities 5 drownings and 3 miscellaneous deaths in Ohio. Two girls were struck by lightning in Geauga and Scioto counties and a Lima man burned to death in his bedroom. This weekend raised Ohio's year total to 377 weekend deaths with 256 in traffic accidents.
