The polar dirigible Italia, commanded by General Umberto Nobile, fights to reach Spitzbergen as winds batter her and fuel runs low. The ship has been aloft about 60 hours, longer than the 40 hour plan, after its triumphal north pole cruise.
At Kings Bay Spitzbergen the Italia over nine hours overdue after a successful north pole cruise fights Arctic storms to reach base. Radio silence persisted as the craft, commanded by Gen. Umberto Nobile, lagged behind a 40 hour plan by about 12 hours.
The Italia struggles against a severe storm with uncertain fuel and possible wireless failure as landing forces monitor for an emergency landing. Captain Nobile, who designed and piloted the ship, remains at the helm amid ice encrusting the hull and heavy seas.
Berlin dispatch reports General Umberto Nobile telegraph stating head winds push the polar dirigible Italla eastward above the territory east of the twentieth meridian of longitude or northeast of Spitzbergen. He ends with All well.
Pittsburgh Police Superintendent Peter C. Walsh says prohibition is a failure and the greatest agitator of crime. He calls for the amendment to be wiped from the statute books as other officials add their denunciations.
California's embargo on Ohio fruit and nursery products due to the oriental fruit moth will not greatly affect Ohio's industry says Richard Faxon state chief of plant industry. Ohio is among several states with the moth and the division issues guidance on pest control.
In Portsmouth a neutral committee will meet in New Boston tomorrow to end the 150 student strike at Glenwood high School. In Cleveland on May 25 Congress man James T. Begg, Republican governor nominee candidate, criticized rising Ohio government costs. He contrasted Ohio's 600 percent state debt increase with a national debt decrease and argued high taxes drive industry to other states.
In Columbus on May 25 Hamilton High School defeated Canton McKinley 8 to 0 in the Class A Ohio high school championship elimination game. Aquinas of Columbus and Galton High School played next as Athens failed to appear for its match with Cleveland Heights.
Dan W. Williams chairman of the Ohio board of clemency and resident of Jackson Ohio is recovering from an appendectomy performed during a visit to his son Ben Ames Williams. His daughter Mrs Ray Sims resides in Columbus.
Lancaster May 25. William Lewis former Columbus news editor for the Lancaster Gazette spent two hours in the county jail on a habeas corpus writ before Common Pleas Judge Brooks E Shell dismissed the contempt charge as error. The case arose after an editorial criticizing a Fairfield County decision led to a contempt arrest by Justice Boerstler. Judge Shell ruled Boerstler had no jurisdiction and that the editorial did not disturb the court, noting the incident likely stemmed from an official temper loss.
The government has collected over $2,000,000 in income taxes from figures tied to the Continental Trading oil deal, Secretary Mellon told the Senate. James E. O Neill paid $151,305. Harry M. Blackmer $151,597. Sinclair Crude Oil Purchasing Company $303,194, taxes on profits by Harry F. Sinclair and Colonel Robert W. Stewart included.
London May 25. Fighting continues between northern and southern Chinese forces outside Feking. Chang Tso Lin’s troops resist far more than expected as nationalist armies push on Peking and Tientsin from a double front. Observers predicted the northern capital’s fall momentarily but note retreat into Manchuria or defeat by southern forces.
In Innsbruck Austria May 25 police clashed with students protesting causing numerous injuries and a wave of arrests. A government communication condemned the rioting after the Italian flag was torn down from the Italian consulate. Twenty two arrests were reported with many wounded as officers used batons to quell the unrest.
Herbert C. Doyle president of the Sleeper Radio Corporation of Long Island City died when his Ireland meteor biplane crashed on Sam Morrell's farm near Curtiss Field at Sam Morrell's farm Curtiss Field.
Columbus May 25 state education director John L. Clifton issued summons to the New Boston school superintendent and high school principal to confer with him as the state department of education takes a hand in the local strike.
Two deputies and guards at the Florence coal mine of Cambridge Collieries in Caldwell district faced gunfire during last night’s disturbances. Two bullets struck the tipple, two pierced a miner’s picket tent, and a guard returned fire after a public union miners meeting at the courthouse park.
Chicago May 25. A United Press survey shows Middle West police chiefs largely oppose reopening saloons. Most insist the saloon should never return, with few exceptions in larger cities. Chief Jacob Graut of Cleveland supports a regulated saloon, but his view is not common among peers.
Margaret Anne Thompson twelve year old daughter of Mrs Thompson of Lancaster street sustained a fractured right arm at the shoulder Wednesday evening while playing at Central school grounds with other children. She attends Junior high school.
Delta Tau Delta won the Goldsberry sing cup at Ohio University on Lindley hall terrace in a four-group contest. Beta Theta Pi received honorable mention as Phi Delta Theta and Tau Kappa Epsilon withdrew, leaving Phi Kappa Tau Sigma Pi Beta Theta Pi and Delta Tau Delta to compete.
Gallipolis Ohio May 25 Congressmen Tom Jenkins of the Tenth district and Judge Roscoe Mauck will speak at the Silver bridge dedication ceremony on Memorial day. Delegations from nearby Ohio towns are expected to attend.
Local Union No. 296 meeting at Red Men hall in Glouster yesterday requested International President John L. Lewis to call a policy committee session. The group opposed the city soup kitchen and agreed to report names of Mine No. 10 workers who returned to work at the 1917 scale to Indianapolis. Oral Dougherty attended and spoke briefly.
Edith Cromwell of Bridgeport after bearing 18 children seeks voluntary motherhood and possible separation or divorce. Cleveland Common Pleas Judge Weygandt and Juvenile Judge Eastman advocate legal protection, suggesting health and welfare concerns justify separation or custody actions.
Four Democratic senators abandoned their filibuster against the Muscle Shoals conference report at 11:40 a m after more than 24 hours of continuous session. Hope for a veto persisted as hopes rose in Washington.
Senator Curtis met with President Coolidge at the White House to urge a veto of the Muscle Shoals bill. Republicans hoped a Coolidge veto would break the filibuster that kept the Senate in all night and continued at 10 46 a m. Some leaders favored delaying adjournment by a week to defeat the filibusters, but the plan failed.
Steubenville report says Mrs. Catherine Payton 20, married two months, died May 25 after May 12 razor attack. Police renew hunt for her husband Ira Payton 23 who allegedly wielded the weapon.

Bender denounces the Marshall bill, calling it insolence in American jurisprudence and condemns licensing tag charges and state traffic controls. He labels opponents a return to commercialized law enforcement and banditry.
Clark Glenn, 35, a laundry truck driver, was stabbed to death in Akron. Oliver P. Coryell, 40, a building contractor, was arrested at his home after the attack with a rubber worker’s knife. Coryell, said to have fled to his bedroom, is believed insane. his brother is said to be a sheriff candidate in Indianapolis.
Senator McNary, head of the Senate Agricultural Committee, announced he would seek a vote to override President Coolidge's veto of the McNary Haugen farm price bill. He said farm bloc members persuaded him to pursue the action and would not let it derail the Boulder Dam Bill.
The American Association of University Women of Athens presents the McGuffey Readers Revue a five episode pageant on June 9 at 8 pm in the Athens High School auditorium. Dean Irma Voigt leads as general chair with14 committees handling casting, music costumes finance ushers publicity and more. cast includes Grace Johnson Emma Battin Vera Trimble and others with roles such as Spirit of Learning Mother Reverend Hughs and Justice.
MITCHELL FIELD NY May 25 Lieut Stanley Umstead United States army pilot leaped to safety with a parachute when his plane caught fire at 2500 feet today. Umstead's leap was spectacular and only luck saved him from death. When the plane a Curtiss P-5 took fire he started to climb out for the jump. His parachute strap caught on the seat and before he could free himself he dropped a thousand feet tangled in the blazing plane.
The city filed a protest with the utilities commission opposing Northern Ohio Telephone Company rate increases. It argues the proposed charges are excessive and unreasonable.
Emile Carranza, famed Mexican aviator, arrived in Mexico City on May 25 following a non stop flight from San Diego California.
