Charles Lindbergh shuns public adulation to resume aviation work. He dons overalls and works on a monoplane, continuing crafts that marked his historic solo flight and reengaging in practical flying.
Capt. Charles Lindbergh, in Paris, will don overalls at Le Bourget to tinker with the Ryan monoplane and fly a brief test over the city before departing for Brussels and then London. He may accept a destroyer offer but has donated 500 to a Paris hospital and urged reporters to leave him to work. He praised French aviators and said any flight is possible with proper prep.
The court affirmed a Public Utilities Commission order setting Celina gas rates at 1.25 dollars for the first 400 feet, 1.15 dollars per thousand for the next 9,600 feet, 1.10 dollars per thousand for the next 15,000 feet, and 0.90 dollars per thousand for over 25,000 feet. The village had earlier enacted rates of 9.9 cents per 1,000 for the first 1,000 feet and 0.70 dollars per thousand for over 19,000 cubic feet.
McArthur Savings and Loan of McArthur obtained a $2839.81 judgment from Judge L G Worstell in Common Pleas Court against J Oakey Hall of Athens after Hall failed to answer. Hall has ten days to pay. failure triggers foreclosure of property by sheriff. Separate judgment of $528 was entered yesterday for Joseph T Reyerson and Son Inc against David R Taylor.
A 12 year old boy, Robert Broughton, lies near death in a hospital after a collision between an automobile and a milk truck in Marietta. His father, John Broughton, is badly injured. A prior year saw his grandmother decapitated in a similar accident involving his car.
United Press reports May 25 that dry forces believe Prohibition chief General Lincoln C. Andrews plans to start several distilleries to produce medicinal liquor. Drys say it would flood the country with whisky and turn corner drugstores into saloons. They insist current supplies could last four to six years and imports would cover medical needs. Distillery owners fear government action but are prepared to manufacture if investments are insured.
Funeral services were held for Mrs Clifford Douglas 30 at Clark's Chapel church conducted by Rev C M Coulter. Burial followed at the church cemetery. She died Monday night from peritonitis after being admitted at 1 am from Hastings addition East of Athens. She leaves her husband an infant son Paul born May 11 and three other children a eldest who died at age one and her parents Mr and Mrs Charles Mendenhall of Morgan county a sister Grace and a brother Paul.
A city editor reports 606 local stories in five weeks from Feb 12 to Mar 19. School news leads, 1258 university and school items, 113 court reports, 56 local sports pieces, 29 church articles, 26 civic/government items, and 10 accidents. Nearly half focus on schools, churches, and government.
A mine explosion in Everettville near Fairmont, West Virginia, left 97 miners buried. Three bodies were recovered with farewell notes written on a dinner pail. Henry Russell wrote I am at peace with God and asked his wife to tell father I was saved. William Erskine and son Cecil said the Erkines are saved and we do not feel any pain. They urged loved ones to remain in the U S A with love to the kids.
Ohio University will not meet Monday May 30 as Memorial Day is a legal holiday announced by President E B Bryan at a convocation in Ewing hall. Final exams start May 31 at 8 am and diplomas will be conferred June 7 with listeners urged to re hearse the service in the men's gymnasium. The convocation featured an eight member chorus directed by Professor C C Robinson with Christene Courtney Brown leading solo parts.
The Gallipolis city commission awarded the electric lighting franchise and contract to Ohio Utilities Company for a 25 year term starting October 1. The action grants the utility company exclusive rights to supply and maintain street and public lighting in the city.
A passenger train collided with a coal train near Ingleside killing Engineer E. G. Aldrich of Roanoke Virginia and F. M. O'Neal of Pax, West Virginia, as reported from Princeton.
Italian aviator Francesco de Pinedo, forced down near the Azores, was reported safe and his Santa Maria seaplane towed toward Fayal by the Infante Sagres. Lisbon dispatches said the plane neared Horta but had not arrived. another report placed the craft near Fayal needing assistance as searchers pursued the tow.
Yesterday’s maximum reached 86 degrees, four below the May 24 record of 90 set in 1880. Forenoon highs peaked at 78, while the low record fell to 36 in 1925. Temperatures by two hour marks show a rising trend into noon and a late afternoon drop.
Washington May 25 The first crack in the enforcement system built by Assistant Secretary L. Andrews is expected as five or more chief field lieutenants resign from the duty service. The organization showed signs of crumbling while Andrews tried to hold his men to line under newly appointed Prohibition Commissioner Dr. J. M. Doran.
Mrs. O Myrtle Lamb of Pleasantville sues John E Moyer of Lancaster for 26500 dollars in damages after injuries from an auto collision in Lancaster. The filing was made in Lancaster court on May 25.
The final intra mural debate at Ohio University will be held at 8 p m in Ewing auditorium between Delta Sigma Pi and Green Circle on the Philippines ownership question The silver loving cup will be awarded to the winning team Phi Delta Gamma presents the cup W Walter Ludwig leads the event with judges Dr E B Smith Dr W S Gamerts felder and Prof Albert Gubitz. Public attendance encouraged.
Chief of Police Herb Parker estimated a band of about 65 gypsies entered Athens in eight large cars early this morning. They arrived around 8 30 and, with Service Director Franz Woodworth, Parker moved them out of Athens toward Parkersburg by 9 45.
Ohio apparel merchants from eighteen counties will gather at the Hotel Berry tomorrow for a sales promotion conference on clothing dry goods and shoes. About eighty merchants including Athens attendees will attend under the Ohio Retail Clothiers and Furnishers Association and related groups.
Clyde D. Jordan of Athens asks a divorce from Faythe Snodgrass Jordan in Common Pleas court. Married January 2, 1924 in Catlettsburg Kentucky, they have one child and he seeks custody and care. The notice comes as a divorce of Elizabeth Jewell from Norman Jewell was granted yesterday.
Ottawa May 25. The Canadian cabinet will meet to discuss possible action against Soviet Russia in light of expected diplomatic and trade relations break with Great Britain.
TRY GAS CAR POMEROY May 25. B and O railway authorities test a gas motor car on the River division across the river. An experimental train with motor car baggage and two passenger cars runs between Parkersburg and Spencer West Virginia. The motor appears capable of handling local passenger service with 60 passenger capacity per coach.
Athens unveils Crystal Pool with 60 by 160 feet dimensions and a 1 to 9 1/2 foot depth range. The facility, holding about 560 000 gallons, will begin warm water swimming Monday Memorial Day after finishing touches and water filling completed.
Members of the order of Redmen will escort the Memorial day parade to the two Athens cemeteries instead of the Knights of Pythias as previously announced in the Messenger. All civic organizations are invited to assist in escorting the veterans.
Memphis man Ed ward Moriarity shared six decades of perilous service from the American West to Cuban insurgencies. He spoke at Logan lodge in Ellis about his varied career as a frontiersman, railroad worker, and armed officer, including acts during epidemics and a perilous canal era in Central America.
A lava flood from Atchasta river breached a 1500 foot wide levee, inundating 50 square miles of Coupee parish. About 50 000 people evacuated to safety as six barges were swept away and looters faced deadly force. Rescue boats prepared for St Mary parish as orders to shoot looters on sight were issued in surrounding areas.
Two Ford touring cars ran down Congress Street last night and struck a sign post near West On Street east of the front steps. One car belonged to L. B. Kelly of McKinley Avenue and the other to Leland M. Mills of 16 South Congress Street. Neither vehicle was seriously damaged.
