Education Bill Topic of Session
The session outlined Senate Bill 350 Ohio's education aid plan for about 30 attendees at Morrison School. John Hall of the Ohio Education Association said the plan aims to raise teacher salaries to compete with neighboring states and would not compel local tax increases except where districts had substandard aid. He noted the plan sets a 25 pupils per teaching unit ratio and warned districts with more units must boost taxes or cut spending to fund quality programs. Athens contributes about 70 percent to certified staff, near average. Officials said 62 percent of funds go to classroom teachers with principals and staff raising total to 70 percent. Hall said subsidies to offset increased local contributions would end in June 1969.
