Albert Binderbasin indicted by Athens County Grand Jury for breaking and entering and larceny was sentenced to Ohio State Reformatory at Mansfield by Judge O. Rowland and taken there yesterday by Sheriff Charlies Stratton. He had been on probation but was arrested for violating parole.
Mrs Adelia Norman 78 former Athens resident was buried at Cutler Ohio Tuesday after dying last Friday at her daughter’s Rendville home where she had lived six years. Born in Washington County she moved to Athens in youth and married Henry Norman in 1879. She leaves three children and several Athens relatives attended.
The Rev. Harry L. Reed of Auburn Theological Seminary will deliver the sermon at 10 30 Sunday morning at the Athens Presbyterian Church. He is attending the Presbyterian Church general assembly in Columbus this week and next and spoke in Athens in March 1990.
Alex Root 57 died at 63 Stimson Avenue at 12 15 this morning after a 35 year career as teacher principal and superintendent of Athens County Schools. Funeral services set for Friday at the First Methodist Church in Athens with burial at Haga. He leaves a widow Blanche Root his mother Mary Root and son Dewey Root. Root earned an MS from Ohio University in 1915 an honorary 1918 master and Columbia University master 1925. He served as county superintendent and led Rome Coolville The Plains and Jacksonville schools. He began teaching at 17 and was a lifelong educator and National Education Association member since 1902.
In Columbus on May 2 The Ohio Senate will use its subpoena power to probe the condition and management of closed banks. Senator L L Marshall of Cleveland chairs the special banking committee and seeks a specialist investigator similar to Ferdinand Pecora. Questions cover loans to officers and relatives, officer pay, and overdraft practices.
Washington May 24. Revelation that J. P. Morgan paid no income taxes in three years became a rallying point for opponents of higher levies on small incomes. The House Ways and Means Committee approved drastic increases in lower bracket taxes to fund the administration's public works program, and action is expected Thursday.
Joseph Hrynak, 57, killed himself with a revolver after beating Mrs. Stanley Rice, mother of eight, with a hammer in Maynard Ohio. Mrs. Rice said he dragged her into his house and attacked her before the struggle. She escaped as he fired and then killed himself.
May 24 report shows Youngstown District steel output at 44 percent of capacity, the highest in 26 months. Midweek production improved from 5 percent at the week’s start and 12 percent in late May, indicating a sharp rise in activity.

In Los Angeles on May 24 members of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and prohibitionists challenged Dr Kenneth W Taber over his claim that small whisky doses can aid longevity for the aged. A dissenting audience member accused him of inadequate medical knowledge. He insisted he came as a guest speaker to present two sides of the liquor question after two hours of discussion.
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled Arthur E. B. Klotz the legal sheriff of Sandusky County after a three cornered quo warranto suit. Carl J. Haff's writ request was denied, with the case naming Klotz and Tom Pask among the claimants.
New York State endorsed repeal by about 12 to 1 with New York City over 40 to 1 wet. Of 7,000 precincts tallied, wet delegates led 1,776,846 to 157,460. the Bronx was the wettest county in the state at 65 to 1. Manhattan joined the wave with a 51 to 1 wet margin.
In Columbus on May 4 the Senate Taxation Committee is expected to recommend passage of two bills aimed at collecting delinquent taxes. One bill would allow county treasurers to act as receivers for productive real estate with delinquent taxes. The other would deduct delinquent taxes from salaries of public officials and employees. Private homes are exempt from receivership.
The Democratic party mobilizes nationwide to repeal the Prohibition amendment with full administration backing. Postmaster General James J. Farley declares instructions will be sent to every party leader to back and speed the repeal drive as a top party platform issue.
Cincinnati reports its first hi jack of legal beer as William Fowler of Danville Kentucky is stopped near Independence Kentucky ten miles from Cincinnati after midnight by three men. They rob a beer truck carrying 125 cases from Cincinnati to Danville and release Fowler near Covington.
Roscoe Shields formerly of The Plains was returned to Athens from Detroit Tuesday by Sheriff Charles Stratton to face charges of non support filed by his wife.
In Poona on May 24 Gandhi entered the 17th day of a three week fast with his strength failing so his wife washed his face and brushed his hair for him marking a turning point in the health crisis.
Governor George White lectured the Ohio General Assembly urging a $50,000,000 taxation program to fund unemployment relief, food and clothing for the poor, and public schools. He warned of disorder if needs are not met and pressed tax reductions on real estate while arguing no new taxes for state operations. The message stressed immediate relief costs and reliance on federal and state funds.
