Newport News May 24 Aboard the Old Bay line steamer Virginia en route from Norfolk to Baltimore fire swept the vessel burning it to the water’s edge inside Chesapeake Bay. About 240 people were at risk as passengers leaped into the bay before lifeboats could be manned. Several are reported missing and some injured. Three rescue boats reached the scene as flames shot skyward.

Three colored firemen are dead and several deckhands are missing after a blaze aboard the Bay line steamer Virginia off Point in Chesapeake Bay. Nearly 100 survivors were landed at Norfolk, many without clothes or baggage.
