American forces in Picardy face a potential German offensive as aerial activity rises and artillery grows quiet. German aviators scout Allied positions while night bombing continues. a rear town was struck, killing two women and two children as dust trails mark moving troops and supplies.
The Dutch government told the State Department that America’s explanation of the ship seizure is insufficient and signaled a desire for further correspondence to resolve the misunderstanding. The United States insists Holland send some idle ships to carry wheat saved for her, while Holland maintains the wheat should be shipped in Dutch bottoms elsewhere.
Washington May 21 The House approved by 69 to 58 a measure to stop using grain and fruit in making alcoholic beverages. The move targets the beer brewing industry which relies on barley for its product.
Senator Thompson announced a near compromise between administration forces and aircraft inquiry supporters. The committee on audit and control will ratify, averting a Senate fight. President Wilson backs a tax bill this session, with McAdoo winning executive approval for the new revenue measure, signaling early House and Senate committee action.
Memorial services will be held at Downington on May 30. Speakers include Col. E. P. Brooks of Harrisonville Rev. O. P. Smith of Albany and Prof. Treadley of Ohio University. Music by Downington fife and drum corps patriotic speaking and singing refreshments on the grounds veterans and sons of veterans invited.
The war industries board set the 1918 wool clip price at the 1917 July 30 level on the scoured basis for Atlantic seaboard markets. Fleece wool centers include Boston New York Philadelphia Chicago St Louis Detroit Louisville Baltimore Wheeling. Territory wool exceptions apply to ownership sales of 1000 pounds or less.
In Gianapolis on May 2211 the Marion county workhouse was offered to the government for use in training soldiers. The county has no further use for it since the prohibition law took effect.
Paprederick Nickles, 20, of Brooklyn, was killed instantly in a fall down an open elevator shaft on a New York street. He was hurrying to reach the street when he ran into the shaft.

London reports successful British raids in multiple sectors with German artillery fire near Dernan court and in the Nieppe Forest. Northeast of Bethun the foe bombarded with gas shells as raiders take fourteen prisoners and a machine gun southeast of Arras. Other prisoners taken near Nieppe Forest and north of the Ypres Comines canal.
American forces in Lorraine and the Woevre conducted scouting fights and took prisoners. Artillery operations were active in Lorraine and the Woevre. The War Department listed forty eight American casualties with three killed in action, two died of wounds, two died of disease, thirty eight wounded severely, and three wounded slightly.
Ensign Evan Potter of Detroit and a companion attacked seven enemy single seaters in Heligoland Bight. Their aircraft was seen on fire and crashing, Potter presumed dead after the machine and pilot disappeared amid smoke and flames.
Chicago reports at least twenty two dead and seventy injured from tornado centers in Iowa Kansas and Wisconsin. Lone Rock Wisconsin notes five dead. Boone Iowa four dead with fifty houses wrecked. Newton Iowa two dead. Denison Iowa one dead. Kansas death toll ten across Ellis and Rooks counties.
In Canaanville on May 26 at 1 p m War Councilman A J Gould announces a sub councilmen and collectors meeting at the M E church. At 2 50 speakers from Athens will discuss war topics. Public invited. Girls have an equal vote with boys in athletic affairs at Philadelphia Frankfort High School.
War analysis from Whited Press notes ongoing German hesitation to renew the offensive. It cites divisions reorganized for a renewed push, but Hindenburg delays toward channel ports. Allied reinforcements grow, Foch improves defenses, and German public opinion grows restless amid limited west-front gains.
The county announces six registration precincts for men who have passed twenty one since June 5 1917. Precincts cover Nelsonville York Glouster Trimble Athens Dover Canaan Waterloo Lodi Alexander and Lee with Amesville Ames Bern Guysville Rome Coolville Troy Carthage. Postmasters will assign clerks and registrars and report to the local board. President Wilson designates June 5 for registration.
London reports Sergt H Betts is decorated after leading a platoon under heavy shellfire. He crawled from a shell–blocked trench to shoot two snipers and later walked the trench line under bombardment, inspiring his men with a bold example.
A marriage license was issued in Chillicothe to John A. Courtney of Marion Ohio and Thelma C Barricks of Chillicothe Courtney is described as a former Athens boy who moved from Marion County recently. Britain faces a need for 172000 additional homes for workers.
Camp Sherman Alabama May 21 The One Hundred Thirty-fourth Machine Gun Battalion and headquarters troops depart for an unspecified new camp not a port of embarkation. Home letters will show transfers via postmarks other than Camp Sheridan. Units leave in excellent shape with intensive training continuing amid heat and low sickness and few fallouts during drills.
A veteran storyteller recalls German tactics described as foul and treacherous. He cites incidents in early war days including poisoned wells and hidden traps in huts, dugouts, barns, and shrines, recounting a fatal incident caused by a probing branch triggering a hidden blast.
Local recruiting station reports several new enlistments including Chauncey Hartley heading to Fort Benjamins as a conductor in the 60th Engineers and Nelsonville’s Wm. BE Hartley and R. D. 8’s Harry H. Simmons in the 56th Engineers. John F. Cochran of Chadley serves in the cavalry while Arthur D. Lott joins an industrial training program at Paraíso University. WN. A. at Camp Laurel Md. and Lott’s course open to 18 to 21 year olds. The office continues examinations as national guard Companies may be organized.
United Press reports Detroit May 22 that the Lake yards are heavily engaged in government shipbuilding. Schwab says plans provide for two more deadweight tonnage in the Lakes district during the coming fiscal year, with output to exceed last year’s national total.
London May 12 The American Labor head James spoke to United Press dispatchers urging speed in all war necessities and predicts a swift conclusion to the conflict after touring Britain and France. Also local notice: County School Board to meet Supt Roots office Tuesday evening May 28 at seven o'clock.
Guy J. Fierce a Trimble contractor and builder with deep local ties announces his candidacy for Athens County recorder in the upcoming August primary. He recently sold his Trimble lumber yard to Bryson Lumber Co and pledges a straightforward businesslike approach if elected.
A baby boy born at 3 o'clock this morning to Mr and Mrs Harry Peyton of Alexander township weighed seven pounds. He was named Pershing Foch Peyton after American and French commanders. He is grandson of Mr and Mrs J W Gilkey of Alexander township.
