Yank and Jap Duel Over Tree Shadow on Eniwetok
Pfc. Andrew Leway of Akron and Pvt. John Romanchak of Cleveland encountered a Japanese soldier hiding behind a tree during the Eniwetok Atoll operation with the 106th Infantry Regiment. Leway’s rifle jammed at first. Romanchak warned him and the second shot killed the enemy. Romanchak was later killed, and Leway pledged to buy him beer as thanks.
