Knife, Beech Tree And Boy Is Happy
POMEROY May 17 There is hardly an accessible beech tree in all the land which does not carry the scars of the boy and his jackknife. Initials and grotesque carvings mark beech trees along the Ohio river valleys and hills. A Civil War veteran, John M. Stivers, recalled carving his name as a youth and returning 70 years later to find the tree unchanged apart from aging. Early surveyors in Meigs County left marks in 1819 that remain visible.
