Relief crews raced through debris after a tornado devastated South Amarillo killing four people and injuring at least 63. Red Cross teams flew in from St. Louis as heavy hail and rain hindered rescue efforts.
Shelby police say Charles Jenkins Jr 25 of Polk Ohio a Mans field Reformatory parolee is held on abduction charges for taking 17 year old Josephine White of Shelby. Jenkins was arrested with Sheriff M F Rickenbrod and Chief L C Coffey and admitted abducting Miss White and driving to Mansfield before returning her home.
Motorists pulled two 23 year old men from a car that crashed through a wooden guard rail and plunged into the old Ohio Canal in Cleveland. Robert C. Maxwell the driver and Robert Gibbs were rescued from nine feet of water. Jack W. Sommers Jr. 25 and Alvin Stuplin 22 swam to help and dived to free Maxwell from the submerged vehicle.
A cow owned by Donald Williams of Long Bottom lounged in a road four miles south of Tuppers Plains when a car driven by Tom Day of Athens struck it. The car tore down guard rail sections and was towed into town. the cow remained uninjured and wandered off.

A 14 year old, Frank McGee, fell about 25 feet into Upper Gorge at Old Man Cave Park around 2 p m. He sustained broken wrists and possible internal injuries. He was taken to Hocking Valley Hospital and later moved to White Cross Hospital in Columbus. He was at a picnic with his mother and other Columbus residents.
Eastern zone Communists report a large turnout on the first day of two day balloting for a People s Congress aiming to install a government for Germany. A near solid yes is expected for a single list chosen by Communist Front groups as the USSR seeks influence ahead of the Paris talks. The Western zones ban voting on the congress.
Two 15 year old boys were held by police after allegedly pouring lighter fluid on the left palm of 10 year old Edward Smith of Cuyahoga Falls and igniting it. Smith was treated at a hospital and released. one suspect is already on probation with the juvenile department.

Cincinnati police homicide squad investigated the death of 78 year old Walter Bright found on his kitchen floor. Virgil Stevens who attended Brights party discovered the body after returning with beer.

Mrs Edith Willkie 58 and her son Phillip 29 injured when their car overturned on a rain slick road 22 miles east of Cambridge on U S Route 40. They traveled from Washington to Rushville Indiana. Phillip, a Rushville attorney, is to speak in Akron later this week to the Veterans Republican Clubs of Ohio.
A homemade dynamite or TNT blast damaged the Lakeview Inn tavern on Sunday, the second tavern blast in five days in Portage Lakes. Duffy's Tavern was hit last Tuesday. deputies say the same person likely carried out both explosions. No injuries were reported.
At least 11 people died in Ohio traffic accidents over the weekend. Victims include William H. McClain 30 of Newark killed in a collision, Henry Wilhelm 63 of Columbus killed near Lancaster, and David Gove 77 of Portsmouth who died after being struck by a car.

Trooper Disley and Sheriff Kayser investigated. no arrests. Mrs Langdon is sister of Mrs Elvridge Sauer and daughter of the Rev and Mrs O H Carter of Huntington.
In Guam a 20th Air Force court martial convicted Pvt. Herman P. Dennis Jr. of the criminal assault murder of Miss Ruth Farnsworth and sentenced him to death. The verdict awaits review by the commander, the Air Force board in Washington, and President Truman. Two other suspects remain.

Two of three mental patients escaped after overpowering a guard at Toledo State Hospital on Saturday. Edward Brannock, 36, of Ada, was recaptured in Lima, while James A. Morris, 30, was found near his Amherst home. James Caldwell, 28, of Lima, remained at large, having been placed in the violent ward in December 1948 as a dangerous patient.
A barn fire caused by lightning on the Wheeler Kimmell farm near here Sunday night burned three calves to death. Tenant John Kerr rescued eight cows from the blaze.
