City to acquire West Union Street Cemetery in Athens

Athens plans to take over operation of the West Union Street Cemetery as the Athens Cemetery Association can no longer fund it. The city will receive assets including mowers and about 70 000 to 75 000 dollars in operating funds, with about 40 000 dollars spent yearly by the association. The transfer, to occur by August, prompts drafting of new cemetery code and possible hire of a seasonal worker.
