Miss Irma Stanfield Red Cross executive secretary visited Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Athens to place three Athens children there. She praised the institution and noted children seemed happy, mentioning a year-old placements and speaking with several children.
An inventory of the estate of Alonzo Ridgeway of Athens shows assets totaling 18489.83, mainly in Liberty bonds. The will bequeaths most to charitable organizations and some to relatives. Edward G. Alden died in Coolville on May 9 and his will names widow Hattie K. Alden as executor and sole heir.
The annual meeting of the First Baptist church was held with a dinner by the ladies. Reports showed healthy growth in all departments. The treasurer logged 3476 dollars in current expenses and 225 dollars for missionary work. W. C. Arbogast elected trustee and E. L. Chapman deacon. Mrs. H. S. Foster led Bible school. Mrs. W. C. Arbogast led the Ladies.
Cleveland May 14 jurors resumed deliberations in the Frank Liska murder case. They balloted yesterday and last night without a verdict and were sent to a hotel at 11. Liska is accused of strangling his wife with a kimono, placing her body in a chicken coop, and burning it. An alleged confession was admitted in evidence.
John Pickens and a young man who gave the name John Brown were fined ten dollars and costs by Mayor Koons after pleading guilty to drunkenness. They were arrested in the lobby of a local hotel by Chief Parker on Wednesday night.
Jack Dempsey the American heavyweight champion postponed his departure from England to Paris because his wife remains seasick and doctors prescribe a 48 hour rest. The May 16 report from London notes Mrs Dempsey III is ill and under medical advice to rest.
Attorney General Crabbe will seek evidence today in Zanesville for a Delaware county grand jury to probe the Cleveland Discount company. Governor Donahey ordered the inquiry, with the grand jury expected to convene Monday after a prior probe led to Josiah Kirby’s indictment and later acquittal on false reports.
