The United States plans a larger helicopter fleet in South Vietnam to boost mobility for ground troops. Officials say near 1800 helicopters will be in Vietnam in a month, with more U S units formed at home. Walter Tuohy chief executive of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway dies at 65 from a heart attack in St Vincent Charity Hospital Cleveland He collapsed returning to his office while preparing a stockholders meeting speech The merger with Norfolk and Western to form a giant network was approved Tuohy born March 12 1901 in Chicago joined C&O in 1943 and is survived by wife two daughters and two sons in Cleveland and Chicago
Ohio State University's board of trustees approved a two-year university college for freshmen and sophomores adjoining the central campus in Columbus. It will enroll most lower division students under open admission while juniors and seniors enter OSU proper after screening. Jacob E. Davis was elected chairman. Alan B. Loop resigns from the board. Gov Rhodes to name successor.
In South Viet Nam U S Marines wiped out a Viet Cong force and destroyed a training camp near Da Nang after a 10 hour battle. U S air power claimed 135 missions over North Viet Nam with heavy strikes on barracks, buildings and antiaircraft sites.
Milwaukee judge refuses to stay order mandating the Atlanta Braves return to Milwaukee unless the National League offers an expansion club in 1967. NL must submit by Monday noon an expansion plan for a 1967 Milwaukee franchise or the Braves must be sent back.
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara called Hebert’s accusations about the Joint Chiefs and the B52 B58 bomber plan unfounded. Hebert released testimony claiming the JCS favors full-scale new manned bombers, challenging McNamara’s phaseout decision slated for 1970.
Chesapeake and Ohio stockholders approve a merger with Norfolk and Western by a record tally at the annual meeting. N and W votes also move forward in Roanoke Va where 86.6 percent of shares voted in favor. Walter J Tuohy, C&O chief executive, died of a heart attack during the week.
Washington approved a 95541 loan under the Public Works and Economic Development Act of 1965 to support operation of the Institute for Regional Development at Athens through June 30, 1966. Rep. Robert Sweeney announced the action.
